Shovels, brooms and paint rollers in hand, a group of Spartanburg Methodist College freshmen lent helping hands to the Fuller Center for Housing on Saturday.

The college group’s site was Arcadia United Methodist Church, where students painted over graffiti on an old church building, washed windows, did landscape work and helped in the church’s family life building.

More than 400 freshmen who will start classes this week participated in the ninth annual Freshman Day of Service at 18 sites throughout Spartanburg County. The college said the mandatory yearly service project helps forge friendships between strangers and assists the community.
