Poll: Disaster ReBuilders’ work voted ministry’s top story of 2020

The 2020 hurricane season set a record with 30 named storms — the most on record since record-keeping began in 1851 — and was one of the most destructive in history, facts with which the Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders are all too familiar.

In fact, the Disaster ReBuilders have been extremely busy the past few years. They set up a base near Galveston Bay after Hurricane Harvey struck in 2017 and then set up bases in New Bern, N.C. and Panama City, Fla., after hurricanes Florence and Michael struck in 2018. They were still working in all three of those locations this year when Hurricane Laura struck Louisiana in August of this year, leading them to set up a base in Port Sulphur, La. With a record five named storms striking Louisiana in 2020, the Disaster ReBuilders have had no shortage of work in the state.

Their response to the Louisiana storms and their continued work in other locations — with only a slight delay in volunteer teams due to COVID before enough safety protocols could be enacted — was selected in an informal poll of Fuller Center for Housing supporters as the ministry’s top story of the year. (The poll remains open at FullerCenter.org/2020TopStories, where you also can find story summaries for the other top story contenders.)

To date, 32 percent of the 170-plus respondents selected the Disaster ReBuilders’ work as the top story. Second with 20 percent of votes was the addition of five new covenant partners in the United States. It is noteworthy, of course, that the Fuller Center of Armenia’s surpassing the 1,000-home milestone was reported after the poll was posted and certainly is one of the ministry’s top stories of the year.
