Help Nepal rebuild after devastating floods

Catastrophic flooding has devastated communities in Nepal where The Fuller Center for Housing has partnered with families for more than two decades. Lives have been lost, homes and farms destroyed, and roads and bridges washed away, leaving some communities difficult to reach.

Some Fuller Center homeowner partners have been affected, and our local leaders are continuing to assess the damage under extremely difficult conditions. As immediate needs become clearer, The Fuller Center is preparing to help families with the long-term work of recovery and rebuilding.

Nepal holds a special place in The Fuller Center’s history. It was the first country outside the United States where The Fuller Center began working, dating all the way back to our founding in 2005. Those relationships have endured for more than two decades and through some extraordinarily difficult times.

After Nepal’s devastating 2015 earthquake, The Fuller Center played a major role in rebuilding homes while also sharing and teaching earthquake-resistant construction techniques. In communities where 80 to 90 percent of non-Fuller Center homes were destroyed, Fuller Center homes built using those techniques remained standing. The knowledge gained and shared through that recovery effort helped communities build safer homes for the future.

Now, those relationships are being called upon again.

“The reports from the Fuller Center leaders in Nepal of the destruction paint a picture just as bad as the images we’ve all seen,” said Ryan Iafigliola, The Fuller Center’s Vice President of International Programs. “This happened in communities where we’ve been partnering with families for over 10 years, so it feels very close to home. It has taken lives and the lives of beloved family members. It also devastated homes, transportation access, farms, livelihoods and other infrastructure.

“This is one of our ‘home’ areas around the world, filled with amazing people with whom we have already walked through an earthquake that destroyed 80-90% of the non-Fuller Center homes in the area. With God’s help and yours, we will again respond and bring renewed hope and light to a difficult time.
