Anti-poverty housing movement attracts Mennonite leaders and volunteers

Where fallen-down, condemned homes once lined the poverty-stricken Fountain Square neighborhood of Indianapolis, 22 homes have been made simple and decent with help from hundreds of volunteers, including Mennonites and Amish.

A home of their own

Chuck Davis was born with cerebral palsy. Thaddeus Harris, a construction worker, suffered serious injuries in 2001 when he was thrown off the back of a truck. Both men use wheelchairs to get around.

Thanks in part to members of First Presbyterian Church in Americus, Ga., Harris and Davis soon will be living next door to each other in a new handicap-accessible, energy-efficient duplex.

Church members donate time to build house with Fuller Center

This past weekend, area residents took this saying to heart and logged more than 500 volunteer hours this weekend with the Americus-Sumter Fuller Center for Housing during a Faith In Action weekend.
