“Good Morning America,” Robin Roberts feature recovery work in Hammond, Louisiana

HAMMOND, Louisiana — The Fuller Center Disaster ReBuilders were able to set up a base in hard-hit Hammond, Louisiana, immediately after Hurricane Ida struck in late August because they already had plenty of established connections in Southeast Louisiana — most notably the Ginger Ford Northshore Fuller Center for Housing, which has a long track record of helping families in Hammond and surrounding communities.

On Wednesday, one month after Ida struck, “Good Morning America’s” Robin Roberts visited Hammond — where she was a basketball star at Southeastern Louisiana University — to check on one of the communities she considers home. She visited with the Williams family, a couple with seven children whose home was severely damaged by Ida and is now being repaired by the Disaster ReBuilders.

Roberts spoke with the Williams family and the Disaster ReBuilders’ Heather Westcott in a report that features plenty of footage of volunteers and an outstanding AmeriCorps NCCC team on the scene.
