Destination Destin – By Becky Acton

Early start today! The first alarm clock went off around 4:15 this morning and everyone was up and getting ready by 4:30. We packed up, ate breakfast, went over the route and had devotions, then hit the road!

Our 50-mile day was one of my favorite rides so far. It was a beautiful morning for a bike ride, and like the past two days, we got to ride some along the water. Our journey today brought us from Panama City to Destin, Fla. I was impressed by the number of cyclists we saw on the road so early in the morning. Some of our riders even joined up with local riders for a few miles along the way.

We had one rest stop today at the halfway point, and then finished the 50 miles and arrived at St. Andrews Episcopal Church, all by 10:15 a.m.! It was nice to have so much of the day left after biking today – we joked about how we could even go back to sleep, wake up, and start the day again.

Church members Jerry and Kathy were there to greet us when we arrived, along with some homemade cookies that they baked! They helped us settle in, and then Kathy gave a few of us a tour of the church, pointing out the laundry facilities and of course, the shower. After that everyone split up – some took showers, some went to a local bike shop and out to explore the city, while others (like me) took a nap! I don’t know how these riders have been functioning the
past 42 days with so little sleep!

We had a perfect end to our day with a wonderful potluck put on by St. Andrews Church. Now, I’ve been to a good number of potlucks since I moved to the small town in Georgia where I live, but this potluck was top quality! There was a great feast of excellent food, including several desserts. They even had little labels for all the dishes that were brought! The people of St. Andrews have made us feel very welcomed and I’m looking forward to spending the next two nights here!

  • Hey Becky – welcome to the ride from afar in both distance and time (Pittsburgh to DC seems so long ago). Hope you have a great ride and no flats.

  • OK – not fair that you have more names than shoes. Chris isn’t in there – no Sidis. Kelli, those flip-flops are probably yours. And I’d like a review from the owner of the Pearl Izumi MTB shoes in photo A because I’m considering them. F is Ryan, B is Susan (I only think so because of previous photos) and as for the rest, I have no clue.

    See everyone Friday! Ride safe!
