College town tackles tough jobs

Lauren Smith and Jasmine Harper usually volunteer to help with cleaning duties or work with children, so they were itching to try a construction project.
The University of South Carolina Upstate juniors were two of several students left itching after installing insulation at a home in the Clifton area. They had joined the Fuller Center for Housing in helping a homeowner convert a carport into a needed extra bedroom.
“We said, ‘Let’s go do some drywall,’ ” Smith said with a smile.
