Smyth County

Smyth County

The Smyth County Fuller Center for Housing formed in late 2008 is located in the lower portion of the Great Valley of Western Virginia. The county has three major valleys carved by the three forks of the Holston River, and a large portion of the county is located within the boundaries of the beautiful Mount Rogers National Park. Despite the beauty there is a  short supply of affordable housing in this region. Across the region, 20 percent of homeowners and 25 percent of renters live in mobile homes. Some of the challenges in Smyth County range from substandard structures to rising prices in areas that remain economically depressed.  Smyth County Fuller Center for Housing, a former Habitat for Humanity affiliate contiues to make strides in their grassroot efforts to make a difference.

Millard Fuller Legacy Build Project:

Our first venture as The Smyth County Fuller Center is a new home build in Konnarock.  This is a very special project to most of us. Aulbin and Catherine Pennington lost one of their sons in Iraq in 2004, and prior to that devastating incident, the Penningtons had been approved for a Habitat home. Now as we get close to finishing the home and fullfilling the dream a young man had: to build his mother and father a new home when he returned from the war. The home is nearing completion and will be dedicated as a special project for the Millard Fuller Legacy Build The father has recently undergone surgery and treatment for cancer. Our urgency has become greater to help this family. Our most recent volunteer teams have come from First Baptist Church, Alexandria, VA and the Riverside Baptist Church, Chilhowie, VA for this we are grateful.
